Dermal Fillers 101

Dermal fillers are a minimally invasive, injectable gel-like substance that is placed beneath the skin to essentially, “fill in” a problem area to create a smoother, wrinkle free appearance. Dermal fillers are great for plumping thin lips, enhancing shallow contours in the eye and cheek area, softening creases around the eyes and lips, improving the appearance of certain types of scars and best of all, smoothing out and removing wrinkles. As we age, our faces lose their subcutaneous fat (fat that sits under the skin) and our body’s produce less and less collagen. This can cause wrinkles, creases, crow’s feet and smile lines. It happens to everyone but there are options to fight these pesky signs of aging, one of them being dermal fillers! If you want to smooth wrinkles and banish those smile lines, dermal fillers may be just the thing for you.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can help with a multitude of different things and many different areas of the face. The most common places to add filler to are your lips, cheeks, smile and frown lines. One of the best benefits overall of dermal fillers is that you get immediate results! These results, depending on the filler type you choose, can last anywhere from six months to two years, with some people even reporting seeing results five years later! There’s also no down time when receiving filler because this procedure is non-invasive and most treatments can be completed in as little as 10-30 minutes. Nothing like a mini face lift on your lunch break! Because these procedures are so quick, the side effects are oftentimes minimal, if any. Some immediate facial benefits you will experience are:

  • Nasolabial folds, or laugh lines, are the deep creases that run from nose to mouth. Filling these areas creates volume and smoothness.

  • If you’ve ever wanted to plump up your lips or smooth out fine lines around your mouth, dermal filler can be used to achieve this.

  • Want to enhance the shape or add fullness to your cheeks? Dermal fillers can help plump up sunken areas, like cheeks, to restore their youthful fullness.

  • If you’ve ever noticed a hollowed look under your eyes (hello dark circles!), fillers can be injected into this area to reduce the dark appearance and help with sagging skin!

  • Sometimes with aging, our fat pads in our cheeks and temple area can shift underneath our skin causing a thin or gaunt appearance. Adding dermal fillers in these areas can increase the volume and make your cheeks appear fuller and more defined.

  • Struggling with scarring caused by acne? Adding filler to the area can make the indented scar more even and smoothed out.

Dermal Fillers vs. Botox - What’s the Difference?

Although both of these procedures involve injections, don’t confuse the two! The number one difference between Botox and fillers is that Botox reduces the activity of your facial muscles, because it is a muscle relaxer. Botox is generally injected into areas where wrinkles are prevalent, like around the eyes and mouth and even between your eyebrows. Dermal fillers fill your troubled areas with collagen or hyaluronic acid that plump, lift and smooth the skin. Botox is generally better for dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles seen when making a facial expression) while fillers are great for static wrinkles (visible even when the face is relaxed).
